1967 was a landmark year in Nevada as the Storey County commissioners legalized and licensed the first brothel, The Mustang Ranch. Operated for years by Joe Conforte, the Mustang Ranch became the defacto standard by which all legal brothels in Nevada were judged by. There were others that competed, but none could match the reputation the Mustang Ranch developed over the years. Other legal brothels in Nevada may have had a different approach in their style of operation, but when it came down to it, the Mustang Ranch still owned the distinction of being the world's famous and probably, the most renown. Despite numerous run in's with the Internal Revenue Service, law enforcement agencies and local officials, the Mustang Ranch still flourished and operated until it was finally shut down in the August 1999 by Federal authorities. Conforte fled the country and today is living somewhere in South America while the Feds try numerous ways to deal with his extradition back to the United States.
